Originally, the Jules Bordet Institute, which specialises in the treatment of cancer patients, did not have any guest rooms.
Yet the majority of university hospitals have special facilities to welcome the families of patients during their hospitalisation and treatment. These lodgings are open to relatives living some distance away from the hospital, and of course to those living abroad.
The association was able to acquire a building at nr 33, Avenue de la Porte de Hal, in the ‘commune’ of Saint-Gilles. The location is ideal because it lies within 10 minutes walk from the Bordet Institute.
The guest house provides accommodation to the patients’ families for the duration of their relatives’ hospitalisation.
A team of volunteers takes care of the reception and day to day running of the house. The usefulness of these houses does no longer need to be proven, as patients really need the presence of their family during the treatment of their illness. Yet problems can occur when these families live too far away to be by their beloved’s bedside.
